The visit was started by a school where some families have been temporarily lodged. Families were piled on top of each other with a minimum of 3 families in a classroom. Children were walking and playing in the unsanitary conditions between classroom tables and chairs.

These families have lost their clothes and provisions. In the current situation, they often fail to meet their primary food needs.

Their houses are always filled with water, families can not return to their homes, which could bring a problem for the school year ahead.

In addition, we made a visit nearby to better assess the damage caused by floods. The following pictures show the house of a family who still lives in the water.

Due to lack of resources and space in schools resettlements established by the state, they are forced to stay in their home, and sleep in the water and without nets.

Twenty children were seen during the visit nearby. A little 7 year old girl was seen suffering from an infectious syndrome since 1 month but was unable to buy drugs due to lack of means. We would like your help to take her for pediatric care in a university hospital.

Hi All,

The torrential rains of recent days in Senegal were unprecedented. Families have lost everything and are living in the water. Accompanied by doctors we visited them. Doctors consulted and cared for all people for free in the suburbs of Guediawaye.

Below is the first report from Dr. Faye who took the opportunity to explain the situation. Young Doctors are ready to go back and provide assistance to all these people for free. However they are looking for any organization which are able to help with emergency materials.

Regards,
Moustapha

In the report of any preliminary investigation demographic Senegal 2010-2011, nearly 48% are children under 5 years old not sleeping under nets. Taking this into account, it was found that among these children met, 2 in 10 had fever during the two weeks preceding the survey. Of these, only 6% were treated with antimalarials early. All this contributes to increased rates of death among children.

Indeed in Senegal 7 out of every 100 children die before reaching 5 years of age. Malnutrition common in this age group is due to a poor diet and recent illness, especially diarrhea.

Stagnant water resulting from floods last 3 years have contributed to increasing these figures. This year particularly the heavy rains of August have created many victims, especially in the suburbs of Dakar. These families are housed in schools and do not always have access to medical care.

A team of young doctors is ready to get out there and give care voluntarily. And it is in this sense that we have to ask for your financial support for NGOs to purchase drugs and mosquito nets, and support the doctors.

cdt,
Dr. Juliette Faye.

Hi Nicholas,

Khady is a young girl of 22 years suffering from limb girdle muscular dystrophy, which is a genopathy, a chronic course. She moves with difficulty with the help of a cane. Coming from a poor family, feeling marginalized, she developed trend suicide. She has been referred by her physical therapist for psychosocial support.

Support given by the hospital of Fann has permitted to deter Khady from the decision to commit suicide. But the funding of the needed massage therapy was a problem.

Thank to AFLK Bourse, we financed the massage sessions and periodic consultations with the psychologist. Physiotherapy is share of the overall management of the disease for stabilizing the spine and allow the patient to also regain some autonomy. After several weeks, we have seen good clinical result for Khady. She began to move without the help of her cane systematically.

AFLK decided to push her assistance beyond the medical aspects. Indeed, she would have stopped these studies at Pre graduate, 2 years ago, when the disease began to grow.

Khady’s wish today is to go back to school…which the therapist feels is possible. Fear over the school was mainly the stairs but the physio has reassured her with the sessions she would be able to start in November. AFLK has issued desire to accompany her in this new adventure.

Best,
Moustapha
